Plaster, Wire Mesh, Acrylic Paint

To create this piece, the form of my foot was cast in alginate. Plaster was then poured into the mold and wire mesh imbedded in the ankle stump. After curing, many layers of plaster were layered onto the wire mesh to build the calf. The inner hollow of the mesh was poured full of plaster and the jagged top then created from mid-stage, thickening plaster.

After the form of the foot and lower leg were formed, I lightly carved and sanded the intersection of the foot and leg to
create a smooth transition. After much deliberation, I decided to carve scales down the leg, which turned into the fine,
abstract pattern present now.

The cast foot was revealed with an assortment of air bubbles within the surface of the foot. I carved a few more, inspired by those naturally occurring, to provide the base for the fungus I would later create. I found inspiration in fungus creation by mixing acrylic paint in freshly mixed plaster and hand forming masses within the holes and along other parts of the foot and leg. The varied purples and murky green mixed to create interesting color and texture. The final step was to dip my entire work in a solution of water, gray paint and blue paint to create the overall finish.
Wallet

Cardboard, hot glue, latex paint.

A complication of a simple material and method. The process of mapping and measuring every detail of an everyday object: my wallet. A cracking, peeling, thrifted, well-worn wallet. Given the parameters of building a replica measuring a minimum of 36” in one direction.

A simple ingredient list and a complicated task. From procuring a sufficient supply of cardboard, to measuring and cutting and recutting, to countless hot glue burns and curse words, this project tested me. I felt uninspired and pained by
the technicality and repetitive nature of the process throughout. My pain still resulted in the creation of a pleasing end result, much to my surprise. This project kept me on my hands and knees, cutting and measuring, and willing the end nearer.

The process of constructing took more long days and late nights than I could bear to count. Painting took a combined total of 5 hours and resulted in the required repair of many fragile details despite my attempted precision. The structure is fragile, yet sturdy, fully functional, with the exception of the zipper, and impracticality of carrying a 3’ wallet.

Aluminum Foil, Hot Glue

This piece has taken multiple forms, in multiple locations. My favorite part of this detailed, elegant piece is its ability to change place, shape and meaning.
Aluminum Foil follows the cracks of an old rock wall, in the backyard of a home in rural New York. Hand sculpted flowers, branches and seed pods dance through and among the gray of rocks and glistening lines of foil inlaid between each. Simple, unsuspecting glamor added to a natural landscape.
